The 50th Golden Horse Award took place last night at the National Dr. Sun Yat-sn Memorial Hall in Taiwan. Zhang Ziyi with THE GRANDMASTERS (YUT DOI JUNG SI) won her first Golden Horse Best Actress. Lee Kang-Sheng with STRAY DOGS won Best Actor. With 11 nominations THE GRANDMASTERS was the big winner with 5 awards. Although Wong Kar Wai lost both Best Director and Best Feature Film to STRAY DOGS' Tsai Ming-Liang and ILO ILO, but THE GRANDMASTERS was deeply popular with the audience as it won the viewers' choice award.

Before the race the three Best Actor favorites, Hong Kong representatives THE GRANDMASTERS' Tony Leung Chiu Wai, UNBEATABLE (GIK JIN)'s Nick Cheung Ka Fai and COLD WAR (HONG JIN)'s Tony Leung Ka Fai all wiped out against STRAY DOGS' Lee Kang-Sheng. Wai Jai stood up and shook hands with the fresh out of the oven Lee Kang-Sheng; however, when the event arranged for past Best Actors and Best Actresses for a group photo, Wai Jai was pouting and looked unhappy. Singapore film ILO ILO won 4 awards, including Best Feature Film, Best New Director, Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Screenplay. Its performance was second only to the GRANDMASTERS.

The 34 year old Zhang Ziyi won her first Golden Horse Best Actress after 15 years in the business with THE GRANDMASTERS' Gong Er. When Zhang Ziyi received th award from Maggie Cheung Man Yuk and Andy Lau Tak Wa, she was teary eyed and choking back her tears. She said, "I have been nominated several times for the Golden Horse, today I finally got it. Thank you to the Director Ang Lee led jury, making me the Best Actress on the Golden Horse's 50th birthday. Making THE GRANDMASTERS was long and tough, but the process was happy. Thank you to on and off screen grand masters, without them I wouldn't be here. Thank you Leung Chiu Wai, he will always be the Best Actor in my heart. Thank you Wong Kar Wai. When my heart was suffering the most I ran into Gong Er, telling me to believe in myself. I did it. Today Mama is here too, last month was my birthday and this award is the best birthday present. Yesterday I got a call from Papa, he is sick. I hope this award will make him recover soon."

Lee Kang-Sheng won his first Best Actor with STRAY DOGS. Lee Kang-Sheng after getting on the stage held the award and did not move, like his trademark gesture in STRAY DOGS. After awhile, he said, "The television isn't broken, this is Director Tsai's filmmaking style. Receiving the award from the hands of Lam Ching Ha (Brigitte Lin) and (Sean) Lau Ching Wan, I hope to be able to remain forever young and reach for the sky." Lee Kang-Sheng and Tsai Ming-Liang made 10 feature films in the past 20 some years. He admitted, "Making a movie is very hard, making a good movie is even harder. Winning Best Actor in front of some many Best Actors, it is harder to going to Heaven." His STRAY DOGS co-star Yang Guei-Mei and Tsai Ming-Liang were moved to tears in the audience.

Tsai Ming-Liang with STRAY DOGS defeated favorite THE GRANDMASTERS' Wong Kar Wai, A TOUCH OF SIN's Jia Zhangke, DRUG WAR (DUK JIN)'s Johnnie To Kei Fung and SOUL's Chung Mong-Hong to win Best Director. Tsai Ming-Liang got emotional when he accepted the award. "Today I haven't thought about winning the award, I only thought that my film's lead actor would win. If he didn't win, I would give the award to him. Because actors have it harder than me, they have to accommodate me. They don't know what I am thinking. They only know that I want to make a movie." Tsai Ming-Liang's "lifelong partner" Lee Kang-Sheng also won his first Golden Horse Best Actor in his 12 year film career. He could not hold back his emotions as he kissed his "partner" on the right cheek.

Malaysian star Yeo Yann Yann with ILO ILO defeated UNBEATABLE's Crystal Lee, TALES OF THE DARK (MAI LEI YEH)'s Susan Shaw Yam Yam, TO MY DEAR GRANNY's Lin Mei-Hsiu and LONGING FOR THE RAIN's Xue Hong to win Best Supporting Actress. Mainland actor Li Xuejian with 1942 defeated UNBEATABLE's Eddie Peng Yu-Yen, JOURNEY TO THE WEST (SAI YAU GONG MOR PIN)'s Huang Bo, AMERICAN DREAMS IN CHINA's Tong Dawei and ILO ILO's Chen Tianwen to win Best Supporting Actor.

Taiwan's babyface giant bust female star Kuo Shu-Yau with the film STEP BACK TO GLORY won Best New Performer. Yau Yau was already very excited when she heard that she won. When sh accepted the award from Vicki Zhao Wei and Stanley Kwan Kam Peng, she was so happy that she cried while she gave her speech. She said that she was not prepared to win and would continue to work hard.

Jackie Chan, He Jun and Jackie Chan Stunt Team with CZ12 won Best Action Choreography. Jackie Chan said, "I have made movies for 53 years and grew up along with the Golden Horse Award. Whether I win or not it is unimportant. The most important is to have the support of a platform like Golden Horse." Later he said, "Everyone asked me why Lam Fung Giu (Joan Lin) didn't come? Because she was afraid. She wouldn't come for me. Next time when Fong Cho Ming (Jaycee Chan) is nominated, he definitely would make her come."
